, chris. and thanks to you for tuning in. tonight's lead, battleground michigan. president obama went to michigan today to confront a crisis that began there. but that matters to every state in the country. republicans in michigan, despite losing to state by 3 million votes to president obama have launched an extreme attack on core democratic policies. they are now pushing a far right agenda to go take down union rights and women's rights. we've seen this in wisconsin and ohio and virginia. now, it's in michigan. president obama went to an au auto-plan where he ripped the gop plan and crippled the state's labor unions. >> what we shouldn't be doing is taking away your rights to bargain for better wages. not the snow and ice. the storm itself is actually located over lower michigan heading up towards just north of buffalo. these storms in the winter that track up into canada drag warmer air to the east coast. that's why we're not worried about a big snow or ice storm on the eastern seaboard. it's going to be warm enough for severe thunderstorms, maybe damaging hail and wind. watching areas of alabama and northern georgia. twa warm air up the east coast. all the cold air has been stored up towards alaska, fairbanks, all the way up towards central canada. the door has now been opened. the cold blast has made it down to texas. there's snow flurries not far away from areas like dallas this morning. as far as new england this goes, if you're traveling in the state of maine right now you have to deal with snow and freezing rain. that's the only spot where the cold air is holding on. it's turned to rain in portland and even rain in upstate, new york. it's plenty warm. it will be wet for yourself this morning. as far as the green bay area goes, minneapolis, just some light snow flurries this morning

heading to michigan to rally autoworkers' support for higher taxes on the wealthy and greater investment in u.s. manufacturing. the president traveled to a suburb of detroit touring an engine plant that's announcing a $100 million expansion in production and jobs. and even as the president touted that economic bright spot, he renewed his case to extend tax cuts for 98% of americans that are due to expire at the end of the year. >> how many of you can afford to pay another $2,200 in taxes? not you? >> no! >> that's a hit you can't afford to take. and by the way, that's not a good hit for businesses either. >> the president's urgent push come as the white house and congress enter the deadline phase in their negotiations to get a deal passed by next friday, the last day congress is in session. president obama and house speaker john boehner know they have to reach agreement this week if there's to be a deal, which is why they met behind closed doors on sunday. spokesmen for both men say that lines of communication remain open with the president reiterating today that he's up for a big deal.
